A dramatic departure from the usual golds and yellows, Velvet Queen is among the darkest sunflowers available to the gardener. The free flowering, well branched plants produce gorgeous, velvety blooms in shades ranging from deep crimson to rich mahogany.
Sowing Instructions
Sow outdoors in spring in well cultivated soil. Sow 1/2in deep and 12 ins apart. For earlier flowering, sow indoors in individual pots. When well grown, gradually harden off and plant out after the last frosts. They prefer a sunny, open site but will grow almost anywhere. To prolong the flowering period, make two sowings 14 days apart. Leave some flowerheads to feed the birds in autumn and early winter.
