Sage is a perennial, evergreen shrub with woody, branching stems and silvery green leaves. In summer it produces short spikes of attractive violet-blue flowers. It is traditionally used as an accompaniment for rich foods and as an ingredient of stuffing for pork and poultry. It is said to aid digestion and, used as a gargle, it will ease sore throats. Plant it as a companion plant to carrots as it is reputed to ward off carrot fly.(18-24ins)
Sowing Instructions
Sow indoors from March to May, 0.5in deep in moist seed compost. Seal inside a polythene bag until seedlings emerge. When large enough to handle, transplant into 3in pots. When well grown, harden off gradually and plant out 24ins apart after last frosts. Prefers full sun.
