Thyme is native to Mediterranean regions where it was grown by monks in the Middle Ages as a cough remedy, a digestive aid and a cure for intestinal parasites! An evergreen with woody stems, winter thyme has dark green leaves and pretty pink flowers which are very attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. It enhances the flavour of meat, fish and poultry and makes a delicious herb butter. Ideal for rockeries or plant it close to your brassicas as it is said to deter cabbage root fly. Keep well trimmed to encourage new growth.(30cm/12ins)
Sowing Instructions
Sow from March to May on the surface of damp seed compost. Do not cover the seeds. Seal inside a polythene bag until germination occurs. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 3ins pots and when well grown, harden off before planting out after last frosts. They grow best in poor, well drained soil in full sun.
