Epicure was bred by James Clark of Christchurch for Sutton’s in the 1890s. It is round, deep eyed, floury and tasty. It is famous for recovering quickly from frost damage and has surprisingly high yields. It became the traditional Ayrshire early potato and is still the most popular garden variety in Scotland. The tendency in Ayrshire to replace it is probably a mistake.
