This was introduced by McGill & Smith of Ayr during World War II (a bit reluctantly it is said). Members of the Home Guard helped promote its use and it quickly became a commercial success because of its early yield of loose skin boiling potatoes. It is still the main early in Ireland and is still popular with gardeners.
