This was introduced by McGill & Smith of Ayr during World War II. Members of the Home Guard helped promote its use. and it quickly became a commercial success because of its early yield. It is still the main early in Ireland and is still popular with gardeners. In my opinion like most early earlies it is at its best eaten early!
