This variety was bred by John Clarke of Co. Antrim who produced the famous “Ulster” series. Only a few of the earlies, of which Chieftain is the oldest, are still available. It is at its best when harvested as early as possible and is short enough to be grown under glass or polythene. It has a reputation for slug resistance.
