From the Isle of Arran originally, Pilot (1930) was Donald Mackelvie’s most successful selection. It dominated the early market for 30 years before acreage declined. It is still one of the most popular garden varieties in the UK. Tubers, even from the same plant, vary greatly in size and shape. The flavour and cooking qualities are very good.
