I am told that this variety was nearly rejected because it is late but it went on to initiate the great reputation of TEAGASC and Ireland as a centre of potato breeding. Cara is the red eyed tough guy for the garden and allotment. It has high yields, weed suppressing vigour and high disease resistance, including a medium level of blight resistance even against Blue13. It also looks good and cooks well although the flavour is on the mild side.
