This is the perfect plant for the back of an annual or mixed border. Reaching a manageable 6 feet tall, the sturdy plants are well branched and will produce a multitude of flowers over a long period. The deep wine red petals and shiny black eyes create a dramatic effect both in the garden and as a cut flower.
Sowing Instructions
Sow outdoors in spring in well cultivated soil. Sow 1/2in deep and 12 ins apart. For earlier flowering, sow indoors in individual pots. When well grown, gradually harden off and plant out after the last frosts. They prefer a sunny, open site but will grow almost anywhere. To prolong the flowering period, make two sowings 14 days apart. Leave some flowerheads to feed the birds in autumn and early winter.
