Gladstone

This is an early maincrop bred by John Watson of McGill & Smith of Ayr. It looks very like King Edward (white with red eyes) and was introduced in the 1930s to rival the famous variety. It must have been good because it did become popular for a while until both declined. In more recent times King Edward has revived to be a major variety again while Gladstone has almost been forgotten.
