Edgecote Purple
Edgecote Purple was formerly in our Conservation Potato section. It is an early maincrop bred sometime before 1916 by Mr Wilde of
Edgecote, close to the battle site. It was a favourite of Redcliffe Salaman, writing about potatoes in 1926. It is probably the same thing as Gloucester Black Kidney and
Port Wine Kidney. All have reputations for flavour and vigour -
the Gloucester variety was supposed to have originated as loot from an
infamous train crash in the area.
