Longer, thinner and more pointed than other Italian plum varieties, San Marzano is a heritage tomato from the area around Naples. It has thick flesh, few seeds and a distinctive sweet flavour and is considered by many to be the best cooking variety currently available to the U.K. gardener. Great for sauces, soups and pizzas as well as salads and sandwiches. Easy to preserve for winter use.
Sowing Instructions
Sow in spring in trays of good seed compost and place in a propagator or seal inside a polythene bag until after germination. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 3ins pots and grow on in cooler, well lit conditions. Harden off gradually before planting out into containers or into moist, fertile, well drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. This variety does not require side shooting. May require some support.
